John Hill Estate is a secret little vineyard and restaurant located at the foothills of the Hunua Ranges, 40 minutes south east of Auckland central. We offer a local and global shared plate style menu, gourmet pizza and burgers, a fully licensed bar and relaxed, friendly staff. We can host up to 50 people at one time, and think we are the perfect choice for your next get together.
You can choose to be seated in our contemporary indoor dining space or sit out on our sunny and sheltered terrace overlooking our immaculate vineyard. We also have outdoor seating and tables scattered amongst our landscaped grounds, and a shaded pergola that overlooks the beautiful Hunua Valley.
You can play archery amongst our vines, play petanque in our white shell court, view local exhibitions in our art gallery and of course finish it all off with a wine tasting.
We are proud to be boutique and within our two hectares of planted vineyards we grow Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Gris. We hand harvest our fruit from March to May and our winery is located offsite in West Auckland.
Our Pinot Gris is described as delicious and dry and our Rose is a blend of our three red varieties and our best seller. We source only the best Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, NZ to make our crisp Sauvignon Blanc.
Our easy drinking Merlot and Syrah are both light in style but driven with full fruit flavour, and our Bordeaux style Cabernet Franc is rare to be bottled as a single variety, and we are very proud that it is our signature variety that loves to be grown in Hunua.
Our oak aged port is smooth and velvety, made with real French brandy and then aged for 12 months in oak barrels. It’s absolutely more-ish and popular all year round.
Wine tasting is by appointment in between our lunch and dinner service (3-5pm) and costs $5 per person, which includes a sample of each of our wines and is refundable with the purchase of a bottle of wine. If you prefer to be seated in the restaurant or outdoor dining area, it’s $12 for a ‘wine flight’ where you choose three of our wines to try; the total pour which equates to one full glass of wine. Bread and dip platters are available to accompany your wine tasting for $13.
John Hill was the earliest English settler of Hunua, a likeable and hardworking fellow and we are very proud to name our vineyard after him and the road that our Estate is on.
The first part of the vineyard (Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah) was planted in 2006, and harvested and bottled in 2008. The second bock of vineyard was planted in 2008 and harvested in 2010. Part of the working vineyard shed and stables was converted to our small restaurant a few years later in March 2013.
The restaurant is coming up to our five year anniversary and we would to thank our local community, family and friends for the amazing support you have given us!
